Advice for Job Seekers ....
![]()
This page is intended
to provide light-hearted advice for the many people who ask me how to get a
start in the GIS field.
These are GOOD ideas...
Attend San Francisco Bay Area ArcGIS Users Group
meetings.
Attend Silicon
Valley ArcView Users Group meetings.
Attend Bay Area Automated Mapping Association (BAAMA)
meetings.
Contact your local ESRI
representative at the California Regional Office in Redlands, CA at (909)
793-2853.
Get hands-on experience any way you can. Try internships or volunteer part-time.
These are BAD ideas...
If you fax a resume to someone, don't assume that it was received.
Follow up with a phone call or e-mail. Your fax may not have transmitted properly
or might have gone to the wrong person.
If you follow up with a voice mail, be sure to give your correct phone number.
If you e-mail a resume, don't password-protect it.
If you e-mail a resume, don't just attach it to a blank message. Include a
message in the body of your e-mail stating what position you are applying
for.
If you live in Vermont or Canada, for example, don't apply for entry-level,
short-term jobs in San Francisco unless you are prepared to interview and
move at your own expense.
